Life Cycle of the Honeybee and how it works for Varroa Mites
This video, by Jeff Harris of the USDA's Agriculture Research Service - highlights the connection between the larval stage of the honeybee and the breeding requirements of the varroa mite. 

The size of the honeycomb cell can affect the length of this larval stage - handing an advantage to the varroa mite.

So once again, it's all about the wax!
